1. The client/caregiver can define conjunctivitis.
    1. It is an inflammation of the conjunctive, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and inner surface of the eyelids.
    2. Viruses, bacteria, allergies, or substances that irritate the eyes can cause conjunctivitis.
    3. It is commonly called “pink eye.”
    4. It is very contagious.
  2. The client/caregiver can recognize signs and symptoms.
    1. Discomfort or feeling of irritation
    2. Redness
    3. Watery or pus-like drainage
    4. Eyelid swelling
    5. Itching and tearing
    6. Crusting discharge that can mat the eyelashes together
  3. The client/caregiver can list measures to prevent spread of the disease.
    1. Wash hands (with soap and water) frequently, especially after touching eyes.
    2. Do not share washcloths, towels, eye drops, tissues, make-up, or pillowcases.
    3. Wash items such as towels in hot water and separate from others.
    4. Discard cotton balls, gauze, or tissues properly.
    5. Avoid smoke or other known items that cause irritation or allergic reactions.
    6. Keep a child home from school and away from other children as directed by the physician.
  4. The client/caregiver can list measures that relieve symptoms.
    1. Cleanse eyelids and lashes frequently.
    2. Apply warm or cold compresses.
    3. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed by physician for discomfort.
    4. Take medication/eye ointments as ordered.
    5. The physician may order antiallergy medication (in pill form) if the child has allergic conjunctivitis.
