- They are dilated veins in swollen tissue around the anus.
- Hemorrhoids can be internal or external.
- Prolapsed hemorrhoids may come out during defecation.
- The client/caregiver can identify factors that may increase the risk of hemorrhoids.
- Straining at stool because of constipation
- Pregnancy and constipation
- Heavy lifting
- Prolonged sitting and standing
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- The client/caregiver can recognize signs and symptoms.
- External hemorrhoids
- Enlarged mass at the anus
- Inflammation
- Pain
- Bleeding with bowel movement
- Internal hemorrhoids
- Pain
- Bleeding with bowel movements
- Itching in perianal area
- Constipation
- External hemorrhoids
- The client/caregiver can list measures to prevent or manage hemorrhoids.
- Relieve pressure and straining of constipation.
- Increase fluids to at least six to eight glasses per day. Avoid alcohol.
- Use stool softeners or laxatives as needed.
- Increase fiber in diet.
- Never delay urges to evacuate stool.
- Do moderate exercise daily such as walking.
- Use warm compresses or tub baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes.
- Apply hemorrhoidal cream or suppository as ordered.
- Gently wash and dry perianal area after each bowel movement.
- Avoid prolonged sitting, squatting, or standing.
- Contact the physician for evaluation.
- Surgical intervention may be necessary.
- Relieve pressure and straining of constipation.
- The client/caregiver is aware of possible complications.
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Anal fissures (cracks in mucosa)
- Bleeding
- Blood clots within hemorrhoids
- Strangulated hemorrhoids
