- The client/caregiver can state the purpose of good oral hygiene.
- To provide comfort
- To decrease unpleasant tastes and odors
- To decrease the possibility of irritation, infection, or disease in the mouth
- To prevent cavities and gum disease
- The client/caregiver can list measures to ensure good dental/oral health.
- Brush teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss teeth daily.
- Eat snack smart—limit sugary or sticky snacks.
- Get enough calcium in your diet to support the health of teeth.
- Do not smoke or use tobacco products.
- Have regular dental exams.
- The client/caregiver can demonstrate the correct method for brushing teeth.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Hold the toothbrush at a slight angle against the teeth, and use short back-and-forth motions.
- Brush inside and chewing surfaces of teeth.
- Brush your tongue.
- Brush your teeth for about 2 minutes each time.
- Rinse mouth well.
- The client/caregiver can demonstrate the proper method for flossing.
- After brushing your teeth, wrap approximately 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers.
- Slide floss between teeth until it reaches the gum.
- Pull floss against tooth and gum to remove plaque.
- Floss each tooth several times using fresh floss as needed.
- If there is a problem handling the floss, try a manufactured floss holder.
- Rinse mouth well.
- The client/caregiver can demonstrate care of dentures.
- Remove dentures, and place in a denture container.
- Place a washcloth over the sink to prevent breaking if they are dropped.
- Use tepid water because hot water may change the shape of some dentures.
- If removing dentures during the night, place them in a covered denture container with water.
- Have dentures adjusted as needed for proper fit.
